How criminal defense works in practice
Criminal proceedings have strictly formal stages: preliminary investigation, investigation, indictment, main hearing, and appellate proceedings. The defense lawyer has different priorities at each stage. At the start, it is about minimizing evidence gathered against the client; at the indictment stage, about challenging the evidence and offering an alternative version of events; and in court, about procedural defense and sound argumentation. Staying silent as a suspect is always sensible until we have discussed the case: anything you say can be used as evidence.
